Microsoft released the latest feature update to Windows 10 (called the Fall Creators Update) on 17th October. Windows 10 is updated in this way twice a year – the update process takes at least a couple of hours and it is actually the in-place installation of a new operating system.
Each of these updates has improvements and additional features and the removal of ones Microsoft considers no longer necessary.
One of the most welcome improvements in this update is very effective ransomware protection which prevents encryption of your files, making the ransomware useless.
Since ransomware is one of the biggest threats to your data at the moment this is a very big deal.
The only hitch is that to use this feature, called Controlled Folder Access, you need to have Windows Defender AV real time protection turned on. This excludes the use of any other AntiVirus such as Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee etc.
Hopefully Microsoft will make this feature available without having to have Defender turned on in the near future.
