Windows 10 feature updates to be more antivirus friendly

Many of you will already be aware that there is a major Windows 10 update every 8 months or so called a feature update. These usually take hours to install and some features of the operating system change.

These feature updates are not only necessary and often beneficial in terms of added security etc, but are also designed to increase functionality.

One thing I have noticed is that the antivirus you have may not function as smoothly after the update. Sometimes it won’t work at all and so Windows automatically disables it and activates the onboard antivirus called Windows Defender.

My antivirus vendor of choice: Kaspersky Lab, began an antitrust complaint against Microsoft because of the way this replacement was handled.

This has now lead to Microsoft recently announcing that from the next feature update (the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update due out in Sept/Oct this year), antivirus vendors will have much better access to test what affect the planned updates will have on their software and take steps to update it accordingly. Microsoft will also make sure the user knows when the antivirus subscription has run out and prompt them to take action.

Kaspersky Lab has now withdrawn the complaint.

This is good news for us too – it makes our computers much easier to maintain.
