Windows 10 is coming

Many of you will have noticed a new icon down near the clock in the System Tray:

Win10Tray

As you have no doubt discovered, this is letting you know that after July 29th you will be able to install the new Windows operating system:  Windows 10 on your own PC.

This upgrade is being offered to everyone who has Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and the insider preview installed.

And it’s free!

If you install it within a year this upgrade is free for the life of your device.  You will be able to install it as many times as you like on the same device (if you need to reinstall after a malware attack for instance).

How the upgrade will affect your personal files and applications is a different matter.

I will be testing it on various machines running Windows 7 and 8.1 and will post my recommendations here.

My advice is to wait a little while before trying the upgrade so that any potential problems can be fixed.

Watch this space (although I won’t be as quick as I usually would be because we are expecting a new addition to our family a few days earlier 🙂 )
